Florida KidCare 2026: Affordable Health Insurance for Families Earning Too Much for Medicaid

The "Medicaid Gap" Ends Here

Nothing is more stressful for a Florida parent than being told, "You make $500 too much to qualify for Medicaid”, while knowing that a private family plan through your employer costs $800 a month. This "gap" leaves thousands of Florida children uninsured.

Florida KidCare is the state's answer. It isn't "welfare", but it is instead a high-quality, subsidized insurance bridge for working families. In 2026, the program has expanded its reach, and most families pay as little as $15 or $20 a month for the entire family.

🩺 1. The Four Branches of KidCare When you apply, the state automatically sorts your child into the right program based on age and income:

  1. MediKids: For children ages 1 through 4.

  2. Florida Healthy Kids: For children ages 5 through 18.

  3. Children’s Medical Services (CMS): For kids with special healthcare needs.

  4. Medicaid: For those with the lowest income levels.

💰 2. What Does It Cost? (The 2026 Rates) For most Florida families, the "Full Pay" option is still cheaper than any private insurance. However, the subsidized version is where the magic happens:

  • $15/Month: Covers all children in the household.

  • $20/Month: The standard rate for slightly higher earners.

  • No Application Fee: It is always free to apply.

📅 3. Year-Round Enrollment Unlike the "Open Enrollment" periods for the Health Insurance Marketplace (Obamacare), you can apply for Florida KidCare any day of the year. There is no "waiting for January." If you lose your job today or your employer-based insurance becomes unaffordable, you can apply tomorrow.

📝 4. What Is Covered? This isn't "catastrophic only" coverage. It includes:

  • Regular check-ups and shots.

  • Dental and Vision (Critical for school-aged kids!).

  • Prescriptions and Hospital stays.

  • Mental health services.

If your child is currently "going without" because the cost of private insurance is higher than your car payment, Florida KidCare is your 2026 financial lifeline.

2026 Subsidized Premium Tiers (Family of 4)

If your household has 4 people, use this to estimate your monthly cost for all children:

Household Income (Annual)

Income Tier (% of Poverty)

Monthly Premium (Total)

Under $44,000

Up to 133% FPL

$0 (Medicaid)

$44,001 – $54,600

133% – 175% FPL

$17

$54,601 – $65,500

175% – 210% FPL

$30

$65,501 – $73,300

210% – 235% FPL

$60

$73,301 – $79,500

235% – 255% FPL

$95

$79,501 – $85,800

255% – 275% FPL

$145

$85,801 – $93,600

275% – 300% FPL

$195

Important Note: If you earn above $93,600 (for a family of 4), you can still enroll in the "Full Pay" plan. While not subsidized, it often remains more affordable than private individual plans because it has no deductibles and very low co-pays.

3 Important Tips

  1. The "5% Rule": If the cost of adding your child to your employer’s insurance is more than 5% of your income, you may qualify for the subsidized rates even if your income is slightly higher than the chart.

  2. No "Uninsured" Waiting Period: You no longer have to wait 60 days after losing other coverage to apply. You can switch to KidCare immediately.

  3. One App Fits All: Don't worry about picking the right tier. The system automatically places your child in the lowest-cost program they qualify for.
